P9, P12 features at IRRI techno-demo farm

PhilSCAT 9 (P9) and PhilSCAT 12 (P12) rice seeds showcased at the Rice Technology Forum and Farmers’ Field Day held at the International Rice Research Institute, Los Baños, Laguna (IRRI) on November 29, 2018.

P9 was released in 2017 and registered in the National Seed Industry Council as Rc490H, also known as Mestiso 82 while P12 is still on the pipeline or under trial across the Island of the Philippines.

A total of 16 hybrid rice varieties were planted in the technology demonstration farm to examine closely each hybrid plots and understand the available Package of Technology (POT) offered to farmers to increase the quality of their produce.

The other participating seed companies are Advanta, Bayer, Corteva, Longping, Syngenta, US Agriseeds, IRRI, SL Agritech Corporation, and PhilRice.

The said event was sponsored by Rice Productivity Advocacy, Inc (Rice Board) in partnership with IRRI and Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 4A (DA-RFO 4A).

Rice Board is a registered non-profit and non-government organization composed of representatives from private companies involved in hybrid rice seed production and sales, industry associations, agriculture  suppliers, and public institutions focused on rice research and development.

Enrique Layola, rice focal person of DA-RFO 4A, Recher Ondap, president of Rice Board, Lydia Estrada, assistant provincial agriculturist of Laguna, Carlos Abon, Jr, PhD, Chief, Technology Products and Development Division of PhilSCAT and managers of private seed companies, graced the event.

Estrada welcomed the participants and she said, “Ang inyo pong inukol na oras sa pagpunta dito ay aming pong lubos na pinasasalamatan. Ang lalawigan po ng Laguna ay nagawaran ng 11, 800 na hybrid rice seeds na kagawaran ng pagsasaka. Ito po ay ating gagamitin para po mataguyod at umunlad ang ating pong sakahan dito sa ating lalawigan.”

A total of 195 farmer participants from municipalities of Bay, Calauan, Los Baños, Siniloan, Calamba, Sta Cruz and Victoria, Laguna joined the technology demonstration and forum.

Forum and exhibition fair was held at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology.

Moreover, Ferdie Garcia of Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) discussed the hybrid rice technology while Layola talked the DA programs and services.

On his message, Ondap said, “The objective of the event is to bring competitiveness of the rice industry in the Philippines through the promotion of modern technology of rice and also poster closer relationship with all the stakeholders and the sectors in the rice industry.”

Said rice technology demonstration were also visited by the 41 delegates from the 25th Asian Seed Congress last November 16, 2018.

Discover the different hybrid rice characteristics such as bacterial leaf blight tolerance, wet and dry season adaptability, grain quality excellence, early maturing, and yield potential promise are the main goals of establishing and showcasing the demo to the delegates.


According to Casiana Vera Cruz, PhD., IRRI’s Research and Development Coordinator for the Philippines, the Asian Seed Congress is a key occasion for seed industry, professionals and stakeholders from private and public sector from Asia and across the globe to come together and discuss challenges and opportunities in the seed sector.

“IRRI is proud and honored to be a part of this of this very important endeavor,” she added.

Ondap explained and said, “We believe that we need to have promotion of hybrid technology, we need to show this to the farmers. And with that, with the alignment to Department of Agriculture Rice Program, we bring in what we called National Rice Technology Forum (NRTF).”

“We are bringing the farmers in the field on our demonstration, at the same time during the growing season we bring farmers in the locality to educate and share them the technology of each company. By far, we already conducted 7 NRTF and have reached roughly 20,000 farmers, where they are accessing and appreciating what is technology,” he ended. #RRCarbonel and VCGarcia
